But he almost didn’t have the opportunity to leave his mark. According to Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas, The Pistons briefly fired Daly during the 1985-1986 season following a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 11, 1986. During an appearance on the “Bad Boys & Beyond” podcast with Keith Trudeau and Mike Payton, Thomas discussed his time at Indiana University, his NBA career, and more. Around the 24- minute mark , Thomas revealed the untold story of his bond with Daly and the unexpected firing. “I’ll tell you a story here that not many people know, that hasn’t been told. He was 78. by Sean Gregory - Monday, May 11, 2009 Follow @TIME As coach of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team that spawned the globalization of basketball, Chuck Daly didn't call a single timeout over the tournament's eight games. When you have Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson on your squad, and are beating the awestruck Angolans, Brazilians and Puerto Ricans by an average of 43.8 points , any coach worth his whistle would have just let them play. But even if the Dream Team had been challenged, Daly, who died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday morning, at 78, might not have seen the need to lecture his team. Unlike most coaches, who are first-degree control freaks, Daly never stole the spotlight. Like any good boss, Daly always trusted his talent, and knew his guys would find a way to win. The Pistons had destroyed the Lakers in body-to-body combat, 111-86. "Adrian Dantley went headhunting twice, after James Worthy and Magic," Los Angeles coach Pat Riley fumed after the game. Asked about the Pistons' hyperphysical play, Chuck Daly said he didn't encourage it, explaining coyly that his undersized Pistons couldn't win with that style against a team of thoroughbreds like Los Angeles. Then Daly reversed himself. "Things change from the regular season into the playoffs," he added. "The game is more physical. But look at us; if we and the Lakers lined up next to each other five-on-five, position-by-position, we come out on the short end. They're studs -- they make us look

Detroit Pistons’ fans love Isaiah Thomas, Dennis Rodman, Joe Dumars, Chauncey Billups, Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. They hate Robert Horry, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan . Both emotions are strong and deeply grounded. Almost everyone hates Bill Laimbeer , aside from Detroiters. People who grew up watching the Bad Boys will defend him until the day they die, but are other people right to hate him? Yes, they are, because Bill Laimbeer was ruthless. RELATED STORY: Pistons rumors: Could Grant be traded to the Celtics? Being a ruthless player is not a statistic the NBA currently recognizes, although the math behind that would be interesting. Committing a lot of fouls is a good way to measure, and Laimbeer certainly did a lot of
