De Rotterdammer was twee periodes hoofdtrainer van Ajax en combineerde in 1990 het hoofdtrainerschap kort met een baan als bondscoach. Later was Beenhakker nog een periode technisch directeur in de ArenA. Beenhakker behoort onmiskenbaar tot de kleurrijkste, maar ook succesvolste Nederlandse oefenmeesters.
