Daring Dibling makes Chelsea return as Saints’ ‘evolving’ star

How Tyler Dibling became Saints’ shining light Having quit Cobham after just one month, 19-year-old is now Southampton’s prized asset and likened to Grealish 25 Feb 2025 - The Guardian Ben Fisher The mannequins stood no chance. After a two-hour drive from Wiltshire, Jeremy Newton would arrive at Axe Valley Academy in Devon on Friday afternoons, unload his car and furnish the school’s 3G pitch for a one-on-one session. The Southampton academy coach would build in-game scenarios using props: cones, dummy opponents to recreate a back four or three-man wall. An iPad would record the next hour, providing the opportunity to review footage, hone details. Once school was out, a 14-year-old at the start of his GCSEs would get to work on his fledgling career. It is the reason why Tyler Dibling’s signed No 7 shirt, from England Under-16s duty , greets visitors in the school’s reception in Axminster . There has long been chatter about Dibling’s talent. At 15 he played for Southampton Under-21s ...

Turn it up to 11... Arguments on Salah’s future rage, but are we all asking the wrong question?

I don’t know what Salah wants and nor do you. But I know how hard he worked to get into this position 25 Feb 2025 - The Guardian Jonathan Liew I  - There are numbers, of course, if you choose to want them. Records enough to drown in. Discourse piled sky-high. Here: a colourful infographic setting out his most recent milestones, begging your finger for a double-tap. Here: a TV host in expensive trainers pointing at a large screen. First for contingent goal involvements. First for final-third shimmies. Look at that shot throb velocity: up a staggering 0.28 on last season. After the break, some nonentities will debate today’s hot question: is Mo Salah enjoying the most venomous Premier League season ever? Stay tuned. II - The minibus comfortably holds three people. Uncomfortably, maybe seven. It’s hot. The potholes rattle your vertebrae. After this minibus, you get another, and another: four hours to Cairo, maybe five back to Nagrig through the rush-hour traffic. It’s a colossal gambl...

Recover, train, play. Repeat. Slot centres title tilt on sacrifice

Immagine
25 Feb 2025 - The Guardian David Hytner Alexis Mac Allister’s face was a picture and it told part of the story. It was an hour or so after the whistle had blown on Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Manchester City on Sunday and the war wounds were visible, the signs of sacrifice. There were shades of yellow and green on Mac Allister’s left eyelid, angry red above that – just beneath the eyebrow; more red around the cheekbone. The damage was done in the 30th minute when the Liverpool midfielder flung himself into a sliding challenge on Omar Marmoush. The City forward flashed a shot in, although it would be disallowed for offside, and fell hard on his opponent. “He landed on me and I hit the floor,” Mac Allister said, with a rueful smile. “I felt a little bit dizzy but it is something that happens.” Mac Allister has other colours in mind – the silver and gold of a Premier League winner’s medal – because this victory, Liverpool’s first in the league at the Etihad Stadium since November 2015, pre-Pep...

Liverpool’s title grip means the season may as well end now It’s February and the Premier League title race is over – the competition may be rich, but football quality is retreating We know who is going to win the league. We know who is going to get relegated 25 Feb 2025 - The Guardian Barney Ronay Ladies and gentlemen we have now reached our cruising altitude . The pilot will be putting his feet up and drinking tiny cans of Sprite from here to the middle of May. Sit back, zone out. Stick on a bad film with Seth Rogen in it. You can even watch the football if you like. Just don’t expect much to happen for the next three months. So much for that excitingly bumpy, turbulence-fuelled Premier League season, all perky upstarts, crumbling certainties and unexpected shifts of altitude, which really did seem to be shaping up just a few short weeks ago. As of game weekend 26 and Arsenal’s defeat against West Ham, followed by Liverpool strolling through Manchester City, the league has reached a ...

Ratcliffe ditches Old Trafford staff canteen and targets jobs 25 Feb 2025 - The Guardian Exclusive Jamie Jackson Sir Jim Ratcliffe will close the staff canteen at Old Trafford and replace free lunches with fruit . Manchester United’s largest single minority shareholder will also implement a similar move at United’s Carrington training base, with only players receiving lunch for free. Non-playing staff there will be offered soup and bread. The news emerged before an allstaff meeting at Old Trafford’s Manchester Suite yesterday when the club’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, confirmed the closure of the staff canteen and other key decisions, including confirmation that there will be more redundancies. No questions were taken at the briefing. While he did not inform the hundreds of staff how many of them would lose their jobs, Berrada apologised for saying in September there would be no more cuts after Ratcliffe’s initial round of about 250. Afterwards employees received an email, just af...
