Red-mist reveller Maguire uses horseplay and horse sense to be manager’s foundation stone

Barney Ronay - Emirates Stadium 13 Jan 2025 - The Guardian It was always going to end like this, a fact that became essentially unavoidable with the sight of Joshua Zirkzee rotating his arms wildly towards the away end before the penalty shootout at the end of this 1-1 FA Cup third-round draw, shorts hitched up, chalk down one leg, transformed in that moment into Warrior-Zirkzee. From that point it also seemed inevitable Kai Havertz, who had earlier fallen over a pocket of air to win a potentially game-turning penalty, would now produce the key miss, a spot-kick so weak he could have run after it, caught up, taken it back and had another go. And, of course, Zirkzee got to score the winning penalty for Manchester United, side-footing the ball into the empty half of the goal, then joyously machine gunning the crowd in celebration, before remembering that he probably shouldn’t do that. Zirkzee is an odd footballer, a mooching, bovine figure, clever with the ball, perhaps lacking a certain...

Zirkzee redemption as United’s 10 men punish Arsenal misses

Immagine
13 Jan 2025 - The Guardian David Hytner Emirates Stadium Joshua Zirkzee had heard his name chanted to the Emirates Stadium rafters by the travelling Manchester United fans when he was introduced as a substitute in the 81st minute . There has been a concerted attempt by them to build a few bridges after what happened in the Newcastle defeat at the end of December: Zirkzee applauded off after his 33rd minute withdrawal , a shattering low. When the full-time whistle went here, this FA Cup third round tie locked at 1-1, Zirkzee turned towards the United support and geed them up . It felt as though the connection had been restored. The same supporters had got behind him when he came on in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool . And it just had to be Zirkzee who stepped forward at the end of the shootout with the kick to win it. The second half of normal time had flashed by, Bruno Fernandes scoring for United, Gabriel Magalhães equalising for Arsenal after the visitors had seen Diogo Dalot s...

What's gone wrong at Manchester United under Glazer ownership?

Man United has been lucrative for the Glazers, but their off-field profitability  has been overshadowed by on-field futility. Illustration by ESPN Mark Ogden, Senior Writer, ESPN FC Feb 7, 2024, 03:00 AM ET MANCHESTER, ENGLAND -- "My money is in this pot and I'm not here to make more -- I just want to win." As a statement of intent, Sir Jim Ratcliffe had turned night into day at Manchester United by telling club staff why he has decided to spend £1.3 billion for a 25% stake in the team . It is early January and Ratcliffe, alongside Sir Dave Brailsford (former performance director of British Cycling and director of sport at Ratcliffe's INEOS Group), is addressing over 100 United staff -- ticket office and administration staff, ...

I can’t think of anything positive Ineos has done for Man Utd – Paul Scholes

Around 250 members of staff have been made redundant over the  past 12 months and Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role is ending. https://www.breakingnews.ie/sport/i-cant-think-of-anything-positive-ineos-has-done-for-man-utd-paul-scholes-1715014.html 07/01/2025 | 11:28 AM By PA Sport Staff Paul Scholes says Sir Jim Ratcliffe has done “nothing positive” during his first year at Manchester United and believes ticket price increases show he does not care about the fans. Ineos chairman Ratcliffe, the 72-year local-born billionaire who became minority shareholder of the Premier League club at the start of 2024, has defended the need to make “difficult and unpopular decisions” at Old Trafford. This includes the controversial mid-season call to raise ticket prices to £66 per match without concessions for children or pensioners – a decision which United fans protested against before last month’s home fixture with Everton. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has introduced a series of cost-cutting measure...

When will Ratcliffe and Brailsford learn from their numerous mistakes at United?

Can they turn it around? Financial firepower suggests they should 13 Jan 2025 - The Guardian Sean Ingle Remember when Manchester United jacked up the cost of tickets for members from around £40 to £66 for the rest of the season? And, for good measure, scrapped the £25 concession for children and asked them to pay full price too? Of course you do. It was barely six weeks ago, on 27 November . But, without fanfare or it being reported anywhere, that policy has been quietly dropped for Thursday’s match against Southampton at Old Trafford, along with the Ipswich game next month. Adult tickets are now £48. Under-16s are £25. And the further cost to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos’s reputation for competence? Incalculable. On the pitch there have been hugely encouraging signs for United over the past week . They were superb at Liverpool in the Premier League and they backed it up with a victory of extraordinary grit and spirit against Arsenal yesterday. But as the one-year anniversary of Ineos...

Bayindir the hero United survive red card to beat Arsenal on penalties

Rejuvenated United show a different spirit, says Amorim 13 Jan 2025 - The Guardian Nick Ames Emirates Stadium A jubilant Ruben Amorim said he had sensed his Manchester United side would beat Arsenal at the outset of a controversial third round tie at the Emirates . Amorim’s side rode out a storm with 10 men to force penalties, sealing the win through Joshua Zirkzee’s clinical strike , and he claimed the outcome had been clear in his mind as soon as proceedings began. “The players were really tired but I felt since the first minute that today was our day ,” Amorim said. “I also felt a connection with our fans, our staff. It was a very good day for us in that aspect.” By the end of extra time United were repelling Arsenal’s attacks with a makeshift unit that had been weakened just after the hour when Diogo Dalot was sent off. A majestic performance by their goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who saved spot kicks from Martin Ødegaard in normal time and Kai Havertz during the shootout , contribut...
