Doveva essere una tappa interlocutoria, la 17esima, stretta fra il tappone di Bormio e quello di Ortisei. Al Giro del centenario però tappe interlocutorie non esistono: e così anche la Tirano-Canazei di 219 km, la terza frazione consecutiva oltre i 200 chilometri, è diventata bella tosta. Colpa della fuga scattata sin dal via con Pierre Rolland, lo scalatore francese che ama al tal punto l'Italia e il suo Giro da anteporlo al Tour, dove ha vinto due tappe: lui il primo francese a vincere all'Alpe d'Huez venticinque anni dopo Bernard Hinault (e prima di Christophe Riblon nel 2011 e Thibaut Pinot nel 2015). Bravo e furbo Rolland a farsi riprendere dal gruppetto, e poi a infilarlo scattando ai meno 8.
