Giro 2018, un viaggio nella Storia

Prima ancora di cominciare, il Giro d'Italia numero 101 è già nella Storia. Quella con la maiuscola: per la prima volta la corsa rosa esce dai confini europei e abbraccia il mondo nella sua globalità. Motivi economici, ma non solo: la Grande Partenza, lungo le vie antiche di Gerusalemme, è un ideale ponte di fratellanza che in un chilometro quadrato abbraccia e unisce i più visitati simboli delle più diffuse confessioni monoteiste: la Cupola della Roccia per i musulmani, il Muro del Pianto per gli ebrei, il Santo Sepolcro per i cristiani. Da questo melting pot di spiritualità e culture parte un percorso duro ed equilibrato fra crono (solo 44 km) e montagne: 39 GPM, 8 arrivi in salita con Zoncolan, la "Cima Coppi" Colle delle Finestre, e la mitologica Sappada 31 anni dopo l'affaire Roche-Visentini. What was undoubtedly the most infamous instance, though, occurred in 1987, when Ireland’s Stephen Roche lined up with the Italian Carrera team as co-leader alongside defending champion and crowd favourite Roberto Visentini .  The pair both held the lead, Visentini seemingly taking a decisive grip on it when he crushed Roche and the rest of the field in a long time trial at San Marino. Yet, two days later, Roche struck back, defying team orders and the unwritten laws of cycling with a solo attack that saw Visentini crumble and the Irishman back in the maglia rosa .
