Trump in a political context, many are unaware of the fact that he was the man who once brought world-class cycling to America. The idea of creating a world-class cycling race on these shores was initially conceived by NBC reporter John Test, who had covered the Tour de France in 1987. As the story goes, after returning to the United States, he presented the idea to basketball entrepreneur, Billy Packer, who in turn approached the Atlantic City Casino representatives for sponsorship. This almost immediately captured the interest of Trump, who stepped in with the offer to become the race’s main principal. At last, after having his name on skyscrapers, casinos, shopping malls and even airlines, the future US president would now see his name stamped on a bike race that would enter upon the cycling world stage. Indeed, drawing

He covered the Tour de France and other professional cycling events for more than 30 years. A resident of the Paris area, Abt retired several years ago. Below, he recounts an encounter he had with Donald Trump at the inaugural Tour de Trump bicycle race. For part of an afternoon back in 1989, I belonged to the inner circle of Donald Trump. The reason was an erroneous remark I made before the start of the inaugural Tour de Trump, the 10-stage, 837-mile race on the East Coast, which he was bankrolling for $750,000. Years later, the Tour de Trump became the Tour du Pont, but back in 1989, it was still

Trump, the 45th president of the United States, is a controversial figure, but decades ago he put his name behind a professional cycling event. Riders from more than 12 nations competed in the 837-mile cavalcade through five states in the 1989 Tour de Trump. In this excerpt from the book Hearts of Lions: The History of American Bicycle Racing , second edition (University of Nebraska Press), Peter Joffre Nye describes how the race came to be. Billy Packer, familiar to millions of basketball fans for commentary on network television college basketball, had an idea to share in late 1988 with New York real estate developer Donald J. Trump. Through business contacts, Packer wr

As Tour de France winner Greg LeMond says, "Pros don't take lightly amateurs winning races off them." Yet for most of the 11 days of the second Tour de Trump, which ended in Boston on Sunday, a 19-year-old from the Soviet Union —a kid who has never taken a ruble for pushing a pedal—led the field around by its handlebars. His lead didn't stand up all the way; it disappeared over a single hill on the next-to-last day. The $ 50,000 winner's check went to Raul Alcala of Mexico , a pro who was quite happy to cash it. But the youngster, Vladislav Bobrik, had been so impressive that no one begrudged him his breach of etiquette. Bobr

Me ne commuovo ancora.
