21 Distance: 93.7km Category: Flat Highest point: 680m After last year’s finale in Santiago de Compostela, the Vuelta returns to the traditional location for its final flourish: Madrid. Despite all the mountains the organisers put in their path, a handful of sprinters always make it to the Spanish capital for a short stage that starts in festive mode and concludes in a frenzy after 12 laps of a short circuit in the heart of the city. As has recently been the case with the Tour de France’s finale on the Champs-Élysées, this stage will take place in the early evening, which adds to the atmosphere and brings out bigger crowds as the heat of the day will have passed. Impresa di Gougeard, Aru non lascia, Dumoulin raddoppia

A due giorni da Madrid Fabio Aru non lascia, è sempre lì a ruota della maglia rossa, ma Tom Dumoulin raddoppia: da tre a sei secondi il vantaggio dell'olandese sul capitano dell'Astanam che è anche caduto - per fortuna senza conseguenze.    Astana che ha qualcosa da farsi perdonare per come ha gestito il finale della 19esima tappa, la 185 chilometri da Medina del Campo al muro di Avila. Qui hanno scritto pagine storiche grandi di ciclismo quali Hinault e Fignon e ottimi corridori come Jalabert, il compianto Vandenbroucke e, nel 2000, il nostro Mariano Piccoli (che proprio oggi compire 45 anni). Stavolta l'impresa la compie un francesino di bellissime speranze, Alexis Gougeard, al secondo anni nei pro, che ai meno venti ha salutato i compagni di fuga ed è andato a vincere da solo.
