Mathieu van der Poel , Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe ’s extraordinary displays in recent weeks make it difficult to imagine the winner on the Via Roma coming from beyond that triumvirate, even if the race’s perfectly pitched finale has historically made a habit of rewarding speed of thought as often as it does strength of legs. Then again, quick thinking can only carry a rider so far if the man in front of him is producing 1,362 watts of power , as Van der Poel reportedly did during his astounding attack on the Via Santa Caterina at Strade Bianche , or if he is capable of accelerating...

Meeting Sean Kelly 1988 - Ronse Worlds

http://www.fatback.co.uk/2012/03/meeting-sean-kelly-1988-ronse-worlds.html This was the third occasion on which I hoped to meet Sean Kelly. Quite honestly, it was never likely I was going to meet him, the best I could hope was that I'd see him and see him win. I'd already got to hold his bike at the Kelloggs Birmingham city centre criterium in 1986 , then witnessed his attacking power in the 1987 Tour of Britain . But I didn't have his autograph - and in those days that was what really mattered. So in 1988 I was lucky enough that my cycling club organised a trip to the world road race championships in Ronse, Belgium. We set off in a builders van for the long drive to Belgium, I don't remember much about the journey but looking at the van now - I'm sure it took at least two days. Arriving at the circuit the day before, we took some time to walk some sections of the course and try and find a good spot to watch the action from. We checked out the finish and the hill cl...

Hoffenheim vs. Mainz - Stats and Preview

Immagine
Mainz did what Schalke 04 were hoping for Mainz were level with Schalke 04 on 7 points at the end of the Hinrunde , 8 points from the play-off place and 10 adrift of safety.  Now, Mainz are still 17th, but they’re level on points with 16th-placed Hertha and just one point from safety .  The last time Mainz were 16th was MD-9 , and the last time they were out of the relegation zone was MD-8 (15th) – a win could see them move out of the relegation places for the first time since November 2020. Twice as many points in half the time FSV Mainz 05 have earned 14 points in the second half of the season – twice as many as in the first half of the season.  Four of their 5 wins in 2020/21 have come since MD-17. Mainz look good for survival With 14 points, Mainz sit sixth in the standings for the second half of the season, ahead of the likes of Dortmund (13), Hoffenheim (11) and Leverkusen (8).  More importantly, they’ve made up ground in the fight for survival: Köln have e...
