From Jewish sleepaway camp to the big-time courts, Larry Brown leads the way

The day being Purim, Brown was asked whom he was masquerading as. “I’m dressed like a coach,” the straitlaced Brown responded. Not an NCAA Tournament coach, as it turned out this season. Brown had hoped later that day to figuratively fit his team for tuxedos for the Big Dance, but his squad’s solid 24-9 record wasn’t enough for the selection committee to proffer an invitation. Missing March Madness surely disappointed Brown, 73, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and several Jewish shrines for coaching success in the NBA and in college. He has guided nine NBA teams and tw...

Brown, the only coach to lead teams to NCAA (KU, 1988) and NBA (Detroit Pistons, 2004) titles , last worked as a head coach in 2018. He coached 24 games for Auxilium Torino, a pro team based in Italy. Brown will coach under Penny Hardaway, who's entering his fourth year leading the Tigers . "Penny has been talking to me for a few years since he got the job about someday possibly joining them," Brown said Thursday in an interview at NBA.com. "I wanted to get back to coaching. I'm not very goo...

The story behind Isiah Thomas being left off the Dream Team

https://www.vintagedetroit.com/the-story-behind-isiah-thomas-being-left-off-the-dream-team/ by DAN HOLMES on DECEMBER 12, 2018 It’s the one missing item from his résumé. It’s the only box not checked on his list of career accomplishments. What’s particularly disappointing is that Isiah Thomas didn’t even get the chance to accomplish it. Isiah was a high school All-American, he was a college All-American, he won an NCAA championship with Indiana, he won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, he was twice the Most Valuable Player of the NBA All-Star Game, he led his team to back-to-back NBA Championships and was named Finals MVP. He was also named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players and elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Many feel he’s the greatest small guard to ever play the game of basketball. But Isiah never had a chance to win an Olympic Gold Medal for reasons beyond his control. In 1980 as a college freshman, Isiah was selected to represent the U.S. on the national team, and in s...

He’s the best bet for the guy who will start a Roundball League in heaven. That might be awhile. Larry is only 81. His mother, Ann Brown, died when she was 106. His brother, ex-Trail Blazer assistant Herb Brown, turned 86 Monday and is still going strong. Brown could be a doing a lot of things at 81. The Naismith Hall of Famer could be playing golf at the country club. A regular at the bingo parlor. Binge-watching his favorite shows on Me TV. Serving on the board of directors at Senior Estates. Instead, he will be in Portland, sitting on the bench next to Penny Hardaway as an assistant for the Memphis Tigers, who will open play against Boise State in Thursday’s the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Moda Center. Penny Hardaway It will be Brown’s first visit to Portland since 2010, when he was head coach of th...

Looking back on Larry Brown's tumultuous coaching career

Immagine
Kami Mattioli 09-29-2015• Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown has had an illustrious coaching career in basketball at several levels, but it hasn't been without its share of scandal. On Tuesday, Brown — who is the current head coach at SMU — was hit with a two-year show-cause penalty and a nine-game suspension resulting from a "lack of coaching control" charge during his tenure in Dallas. SMU is Brown's third college gig and the third time a program he's headed has been sanctioned by the NCAA. Here's a look back at Brown's tumultous career through the years — the highs and lows, as well as the scandals. 1972-74 Team: Carolina Cougars (ABA) The Cougars were technically Brown's second-ever head coaching job . He started his career at Davidson College, just north of Charlotte, but never coached a game, instead resigning midway through the summer . With the Cougars, Brown went on to become the ABA's Coach of the Year during the 1972-73 season and finished ...

Three Larry Brown Stories

https://www.tarheeltimes.com/article68988.aspx By  Joe Posnanski  -  Sep 30, 2015, 11:08 AM EDT On Tuesday, the NCAA hit the SMU basketball team and its coach Larry Brown with harsh penalties . The NCAA investigation centered on star recruit Keith Frazier and whether an assistant coach and former basketball administrator helped him finish schoolwork to make him eligible to play. And the NCAA conclusion was: Yes, they did help him and even though they did not directly connect Brown, they did say Brown did not report what he knew, and he initially lied to the NCAA during the investigation. So, the NCAA slapped him with a “lack of coach control” charge and suspended him for 30 percent of SMU’s games this coming season. They also banned the team from postseason play. It was the third time — after Kansas and UCLA — that Brown’s teams had been hammered by the NCAA for rules violations. Larry Brown is one of the most interesting, frustrating, entertaining and infuriating figures...

Further Feuds

by Mitchell Beazley, William Fotheringham  A Century of Cycling: The classic races and legendary champions The most vicious Giro, however, was that of 1987, the “race of knives under the table”, as one Gazzetta writer put it. The Carrera Jeans team was jointly led by Roberto Visentini, a volatile playboy from a rich family who had won the race the previous year, and Stephen Roche of Ireland. Given his record, Visentini considered that Roche should act as his domestique, after which the Irishman would get his chance in the Tour de France, but the Dubliner had other ideas.  Roche led the race early on, before Visentini took the maglia rosa from him in the time trial to the Republic of San Marino. Two days later, in the first stage into the Dolomites, to the ski station at Sappada, Roche marked an attack from two lesser riders and found himself in the lead. This left the Carrera manager, Davide Boifava, in a quandary: should he leave Roche in front, which risked him t...

L’intellettualizzazione dei problemi là è più spontanea, mentre questioni simili in Italia vengono derubricate a lotta tra fazioni.
