FOOTBALL PORTRAITS - Gerrard, addio capitano

Troppi tutti quei suoi sogni di bambino. Troppi per realizzarli tutti, e tutti insieme. In una carriera comunque leggendaria. Capitano e totem del Liverpool, con cui ha vinto tante coppe, ma mai il campionato. Capitano e simbolo della nazionale inglese forse più forte da Italia 90, l'ultimo dei mohicani della golden generation che però, alla fine, non ha vinto niente; e nemmeno ci è andata vicino. Nonostante un centrocampo - con Beckham e Scholes, lui e Lampard - che sulla carta era stellare e in campo implodeva.

Ha vinto tanto, Stevie G. E perso ancora di più. Sulla sua strada i Manchester United e gli Arsenal più forti di sempre. E poi i milioni di Abramovich al Chelsea e di Mansur al Manchester City. In almeno un paio di occasioni, il Capitano ha vacillato: gli anni passano e l'offerta del Chelsea era di quelle che non si possono rifiutare, ma alla fine il cuore ha sempre prevalso. Stevie G "è" il Liverpool, e lo sarà fino a fine carriera.

Per allungarsela, a 34 anni, lascia la nazionale. E non per colpa dell'ennesimo flop mondiale. Vuole pensare solo al club, Stevie G, che quella fascia pesante l'ha ereditata da Ferdinand, Terry e Lampard. C'è una Champions League da riabbracciare. E il sogno Premier da inseguire, per riacciuffare a 20 titoli lo United del dopo-Ferguson.

A 14 anni da quel 2-0 sull'Ucraìna a Wembley, dopo 21 gol in 114 caps, di cui 39 da capitano, Gerrard coi tre leoni saluta il suo annus horribilis: gli errori col Chelsea e Crystal Palace costati il titolo al Liverpool; e in Brasile il goffo retropassaggio diventato assist per il "gemello" Luis Suárez. Enough is enough, quando è troppo è troppo. Anche per il Capitano.

GERRARD, Goodbye Captain

Too many childhood dreams. Too many to achieve them all, and all together. In an already legendary career, anyway. Captain, and totem of Liverpool FC, Steven Gerrard has won so many cups, but he never won the English Premier League. Captain and symbol of the national team perhaps stringer than ever since the Italy 90's one. The last of the Mohicans of that Golden Generation but in the end they did not win anything; and they were not even come close to. Regardless a top midfield - with David Beckham and Paul Scholes, Gerrard himself, and Frank Lampard - who was stellar just on paper and in the pitch imploded indeed. 

He has won so much, Stevie G, and he lost even more. On his way the greatest Manchester United and Arsenal teams ever. And then the billionaires Roman Abramovich at Chelsea and sheikh Mansur at Manchester City. In at least a couple of occasions, the Captain has wavered: years went by, and Chelsea made him an offer that you cannot refuse, but eventually his reds-heart has always prevailed. Stevie G "is" Liverpool FC, and will be until the end of his career. 

To extending it, at 34, he called himself out of England national team, and not because of their last World Cup flop. He has inherited that heavy armband by Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, and Frank Lampard, but now Stevie G wants to think about his club. There is a new Champions League campaign ahead, and a dream called Premier League to chase, to catch the United's 20 championships. 

It has been 14 years old since his national team debut, England-Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley, and after 21 goals in 114 caps, 39 as captain, Gerrard greets the three lions shirt, and his annus horribilis: the two fatal errors versus Chelsea and Crystal Palace cost Liverpool the championship; and his awkward back pass in Brazil 2014 became the crucial assist to his former "twin" Luis Suárez. Enough is enough, even for the Captain.
