Russell was the most productive and exciting freshman in the country. His feel for the game and readiness is extremely advanced. He generally doesn't blow by opponents off the dribble with sheer speed, though at times he did, but his craftiness to rock opponents off balance to create space is very good. He's proven to be an excellent three-point shooter, showing the ability to get shots off very quickly as well. While he's not an elite athlete, his excellent length and potential to play either guard position gives him a great deal of intrigue. He'll need to focus more attention on his defensive intensity. With Stephen Curry taking the world by storm in his MVP level season, players with less athleticism like Russell receive a boost.

CARATTERISTICHE:
In un Draft che sarà ricordato, quasi sicuramente, più per i lunghi che per le guardie, D’Angelo Russell è una piacevole sorpresa. Al primo anno con coach Thad Matta, sta giocando tanti minuti e si profila come uno dei migliori realizzatori della NCAA.

D’Angelo Russell è stato il gioiello della “Recruiting Class 2014″ di Thad Matta. Russell è una guardia dalle spiccate doti offensive. Il suo gioco in attacco è produttivo sia “on ball” sia “off the ball”. Possiede un tiro efficace e un rilascio molto veloce, al contrario la meccanica di tiro non è delle migliori. Il ball handling è ottimo e questo gli permette di giocare anche da point guard. Le letture offensive sono ottime per un freshman. Russell è abile nel pick’n roll e nel concluderlo con un bell’assist per il rollante o per il tiratore sul perimetro. La possibilità di giocare in entrambi ruoli del backourt gli darà un punto in più in ottica NBA.

Possiede un’apertura alare che supera i 205 cm ed è ancora in fase di crescita. Le doti fisiche lo aiutano molto nella metà campo difensiva, per lui quasi 2 palle recuperate a partita. Peculiarietà che lo distingue è l'uso della mano sinistra, Russell è mancino e questa caratteristica rende il suo bagaglio tecnico ancora più ampio.

Se madre natura gli ha offerto una buona statura e braccia interminabili, non vale lo stesso per velocità di piedi ed esplosività. Giocatore da contropiede sotto la media NBA, quando penetra in area avversaria capita che sbagli da pochi metri per via dei contatti subiti contro i difensori. Il ragazzo sta lavorando molto sul proprio corpo e i miglioramenti si notano. Deve però migliorare anche la meccanica di tiro per essere un tiratore di èlite anche al piano di sopra.

D’Angelo Russell nasce il 23 febbraio a Louisville, Kentucky. Dopo aver chiuso la carriera liceale alla Montverde Accademy in Florida, ha scelto Ohio State University.

DRAFT:
Fino a pochi mesi fa un oggetto quasi misterioso, a Ohio State si sta guadagnando un ruolo da protagonista. Lo sarà anche in NBA? Sì, perché ha grande upside e un bagaglio tecnico già ampio. Quasi sicuramente sarà scelto in Lottery e magari tra i primi 5 nomi che il Commissioner Adam Silver pronuncerà al prossimo Draft NBA.

Few freshman were as dangerous this season as D’Angelo Russell, who led them all with 19.3 points per game, which also ranked 24th among all players. 

Russell was an offensive force for Ohio State, ranking in the Big Ten’s top 10 in scoring (second), assists (5.0; third), field goal percentage (44.9; eighth) and 3-point percentage (41.1; second). 

Though he scored just 9 points (3-for-19) in the Buckeyes’ final contest against Arizona, Russell thrived in his prior postseason performances. 

The 19-year-old averaged 23.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in his first three Big Ten and NCAA tournament games.
