Mondiale U17 Brasile 2019 - AUSTRALIA

Of the four Asian qualified teams, Australia boast the best record at the FIFA U-17 World Cup having featured in the global showpiece a total of twelve times. Notably, they stormed to the final at New Zealand 1999 and reached the quarter-finals six times as well as progressing to the Round of 16 on another two occasions.

The road to Brazil

Australia had to overcome a 3-0 opening loss to Korea Republic during the group stage, but managed to progress as the second-placed team with wins over Iraq (2-1) and Afghanistan (4-0). In the all-important quarter-final encounter with Indonesia, the Joeys came from behind to record a narrow 3-2 win to secure a place in the last four and thus qualification for Brazil 2019.

The coach

Born and raised in the Blue Mountains region west of Sydney, TREVOR MORGAN has enormous experience in youth development. He has spent two decades managing football at the well-regarded Westfields Sports High team, and spent five years working with the Western Sydney Wanderers' youth team, before being appointed coach of Australia’s U-17 team in mid-2018.

Did you know?
  • Noah Botic finished as the tournament’s joint top-scorer with 5 goals as he helped Australia reach Brazil 2019.
  • Australia came so close to winning the world title at New Zealand 1999 when they played out a goalless draw against Brazil after extra time, only to be edged out in the penalty shoot-out.

Aussie football factory mentor bound for Brazil

  • Brazil 2019 will be Australia’s third U-17 World Cup in recent years
  • The side is now coached by highly-regarded youth coach Trevor Morgan
  • He's helped develop numerous male and female international players

If western Sydney is a heartland of modern Australian football, Westfields Sports High School is surely its epicentre.

The school’s list of alumni read like a list of who’s who of Australian football. Australia’s key 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ personnel Maty Ryan and Aaron Mooy are some of the more recent notable names on a long list of male and female World Cup players, with the roll-call headlined by Germany 2006 star Harry Kewell. No less than six of Australia’s Russia 2018 squad went to the school, a common ratio among many of the nation’s youth and senior national team squads in recent years.

Throughout the best part of the past two decades Trevor Morgan was the senior coach at this Aussie football factory. It is the standout listing on an extraordinary football development CV that includes coaching youth teams at a host of national league clubs, as well as an assistant role at the 2009 and 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cups.

Now, finally, Morgan has been given an opportunity of his own on the world stage after being appointed Australia’s national U-17 coach last year. He and his side will have an opportunity to further develop their craft when they visit Brazil - one of world football’s spiritual homes - in October for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
