Solomon Islands have never previously competed in the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The Melanesian nation has previously featured in FIFA Futsal and Beach Soccer World Cups.

The road to Brazil

  • Backed by strong home support, Solomon Islands enjoyed an impressive campaign to qualify for the world stage during September 2018. 
  • They hit 15 goals without reply in topping their group, with their three wins highlighted by a stunning 5-0 win over holders New Zealand. 
  • The Solomons then eased past Fiji 3-1 to qualify amid scenes of wild celebration, but failed to win their maiden U-16 Championship after a penalty shoot-out defeat against New Zealand in the decider.


The coach - Stanley Waita

  • A former long-serving national team midfielder, Stanley Waita featured in three FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaigns for Solomon Islands, including the nation’s storied continental play-offs against Australia in 2005. 
  • Waita also enjoyed an extensive club career which included stints aboard in New Zealand, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. 
  • His appointment as senior national team assistant in 2017 was followed by him being handed the U-17 reins in January 2018.

WORLD CUP SQUAD NAMED


  • Waita has included 7 players who were not part of the OFC U-16 Championship 2018 on home soil when the team secured a historic qualification to the World Cup. 
  • Three Western Tomoko players recently selected from the Youth Solomon Cup made the cut namely Hensky Foata, Zani Sale and Barie Limoki.
  • Batram Suri's son, Alden Suri who was instrumental in the Bulk Shop School League for St Nicholas is named in the traveling party.
  • Other players picked from provincial teams are Temotu Arrows striker Selwyn Hou and Malaita Eagles Bradley Iroseaa.
  • Key players such as Raphael Lea'i, Charles Mani, Leon Kofana, Javin Wae are 12 of members of the qualifying stage team still retain their spot in the team.
  • The team is expected to leave on October 10 to spend at least two weeks in Brazil leading up to the opening match against Italy🇮🇹on Monday 28 October in Brasilia.
