He might bring a "Bad Boy" attitude to his new job, but he certainly will be arriving with years of player and executive experience and respectability.
Independent Sports & Entertainment Worldwide, a leading integrated sports, media, entertainment and management company, has signed Joe Dumars, basketball Hall of Fame player and former NBA Executive of the Year, as president of ISE Basketball.
Dumars will oversee all aspects of the basketball representation business with a focus on "growth and providing clients best in class service at every stage of their career both on and off the court."
Financial terms were not disclosed.
"Joe’s arrival at ISE marks the tone for the future of our basketball practice and business," Hank Ratner, ISE president and CEO, said in a statement.
"He’s experienced on both sides of the negotiating table, has served as a role model and mentor for players at all levels and understands the preparation and dedication required to excel as a player and then make a successful post-career transition."
During his 14-year NBA career (1985-99), Dumars won two titles with the Detroit Pistons (1988-89, 1989-90) and was named NBA Finals MVP (1989) as a member of the "Bad Boys" alongside the likes of Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, John Salley and head coach Chuck Daly.
He appeared in six All-Star games and was named All-Defensive First Team four times.
In addition, Dumars was a member of the 1994 gold medal USA Basketball World Championships team.
As president of basketball operations for the Pistons for 13 seasons, he helped guide the team to the 2003-04 NBA championship, six consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances and two Conference championships.
He was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2003.
His No. 4 was retired by the Pistons in 2000. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Although he was a key member of the Bad Boys, the NBA Sportsmanship Award, an annual honor given to a player who "most exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court with ethical behavior, fair play and integrity," is presented with the Joe Dumars Trophy, of which Dumars was the inaugural recipient (1995-96).
As part of his new responsibilities, Dumars will "be a key leader in moving the company forward with its vision for the future, including expanding ISE’s operations and client offerings in new and creative ways."
According to Dumars, "I look forward to beginning this new chapter in my career with ISE. It has always been an honor and immense pleasure to work closely with players to help guide them in all stages of their careers and this position will allow me to step into this role in a longer term and much more impactful and meaningful way."
