COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 3 Maryland men’s basketball team picked up double-figure scoring from five players in a 91-55 exhibition win over Southern New Hampshire on Friday night in front of nearly 14,000 fans at XFINITY Center.

In his College Park debut, Diamond Stone shined for the Terrapins, notching a team-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. The freshman earned his first career start and got the Terps going with a lefty jump hook on Maryland’s first possession. Stone scored 10 of his 16 points while fueling a Maryland run to start the second half.

“I think Diamond showed that he’s pretty special,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “He’s a huge weapon for us.

"I was pleased tonight because that was a hard team to guard and just a good basketball team. We have gotten a lot better this week. We are a work in progress. I was really thrilled though. We made free throws, we shared the ball and we scored 91 points in a game that we missed a lot of shots we usually make.”

Robert Carter posted a double-double for the Terps with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Jake Layman added 15 points and six rebounds. Melo Trimble tacked on 14 points of his own and Damonte Dodd grabbed 11 rebounds as Maryland won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding SNHU, 50-22.

Maryland started hot out of the gate, jumping out to an early 19-6 lead, electrifying the XFINITY Center crowd with a pair of Layman three-pointers. Maryland held Southern New Hampshire to just 27 percent shooting in the first half, taking a 40-26 lead into the break.

The Terps cranked up the offense in the second half, putting up 51 points while shooting 59 percent from the field and knocking down 5-of-9 three-pointers. Varun Ram came in late in the game and caused two Penmen turnovers while scoring five points of his own, much to the delight of the crowd.

Maryland will be back in action next Friday as it opens up its regular season at the XFINITY Center with a 7 pm tilt against Mount Saint Mary’s.
