MD21 - THE NUMBER CRUNCH: AWAY AGAINST FRANKFURT

1. FC Köln head south to take on an in-form Eintracht Frankfurt side on Sunday afternoon. FC will be hoping to maintain a recent run of results, while Frankfurt are keen on preserving their unbeaten run. Here are 10 stats and facts ahead of the game.

  • Elvis Rexhbecaj scored his first-ever Bundesliga brace at the weekend against Gladbach. The midfielder was the first FC player to score twice on derby day since Miso Brecko back in 2009.
FC KOLN FINDING FORM
  • FC have picked up 9 points from a possible 12 in their last 4 Bundesliga games. Only Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt have picked up more points in the same period than Markus Gisdol’s side.
  • The win over Gladbach not only secured derby day bragging rights but also meant that FC earned their 13th, 14th and 15th points away from home this season. That is already 1 more than last season with 7 more away trips to come.

FC’s recent trips to Frankfurt haven’t always ended in three points but have very often ended with goals. FC have scored more away goals against Eintracht (67) than against any other Bundesliga club, and eight of the last nine games in Frankfurt have seen FC score at least twice.

The last 10 meetings between the two sides have produced four wins apiece and two draws. Frankfurt have scored 19 goals to FC’s 18, in which has proven to be a fixture that is very hard to predict. However, the last two meetings have ended all square.

The previous six results between the teams have been mirrored perfectly from one side to the other. A 1:0 win for FC, followed by the same result for Frankfurt. Both clubs exchanged 4:2 wins before, most recently, two 1:1 draws. Will the pattern continue and a new result pop up on Sunday?

EXCELLENT EINTRACHT
  • Eintracht Frankfurt have won their first three games to start the Rückrunde. It is the first time in a very, very long time that they have managed such a feat. It was back in 1966-67 under Elek Schwartz, where they earned victories over Bayern Munich, FC and Fortuna Düsseldorf.
  • After FC got the better of Gladbach at the weekend, it meant that Frankfurt were the only remaining unbeaten side in 2021. Adi Hütter’s men have a near perfect record to boot, having taken 19 points from 21 games – one more than Bayern Munich.
  • André Silva picked up where he left off last season and hasn’t looked back. His 17 league goals this campaign is second only to Robert Lewandowski. However, in 2021, it is the Portuguese forward who rules the roost. He has scored 8 times thus far, one more than Lewandowski’s 7.
  • After a ligament injury and Frankfurt’s general slow start to the season, Filip Kostic registered just 1 assist in his first 11 games of the campaign. The last 5 fixtures, however, have seen Kostic score twice and lay up a further 7 goals for team-mates.
