Ridle Baku joins Wolves
The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract with VfL
VfL Wolfsburg have bolstered their ranks with the signing of Ridle Baku. The 22-year-old German-Congolese player, who can operate in a number of positions in defence and midfield, joins the Wolves from Bundesliga rivals 1. FSV Mainz 05 on a five-year contract through to 2025. The right-footer becomes the Green-and-Whites’ third signing of the new season following the arrivals of striker Bartosz Bialek and defender Maxence Lacroix. Baku will wear the number 20 shirt at VfL.
Goal on league debut
Mainz-born Baku started playing football with the 05ers, going through all the youth teams at FSV before being promoted to the first team in summer 2017. After making his Mainz debut in a 3-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the last 16 of the DFB Cup on 19 December 2017, Baku made his Bundesliga bow in a 3-0 win against RB Leipzig on 29 April 2018 – a game in which he also scored his first league goal. He has also represented Germany at all youth levels from the U18s to the U21s, for whom he has recently made six appearances.
“The best conditions”
“I’m looking forward to the new challenge,” said Baku. “I have everything to thank FSV Mainz 05 for and the club will always have a special place in my heart. However, I felt it was time to take the next step in my development and in Wolfsburg I have the best conditions to do that.”
“Ridle has impressed us with his development as a player and in the talks we held,” added VfL sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “He’s young, hungry for success and completely buys into the path we have set out on. We’re pleased to have a versatile player who can play in several positions.”
