Mon 20 Nov 2023 at 03:30 In December 1979, the Irish cycling legend lined up in the colours of Dundrum club Orwell Wheelers and took the honours in Balbriggan against some other soon-to-be-famous headline-makers As Stephen Roche took the title by over three minutes, Raphael Kimmage took bronze ahead of brother Paul Stephen Roche was Irish national cyclo-cross champion in 1979 While Stephen Roche lost traction and time to the lead quartet on the muddiest part of the course in the early laps, he always fought his way back to the front. As Stephen Roche took the title by over three minutes,  Raphael Kimmage took bronze ahead of brother Paul Stephen Roche was Irish national cyclo-cross champion in 1979 While Stephen Roche may be best remembered for being the first and only Irishman thus far to win the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia or world professional road race championshi...

BIG MOUTH STRIKES AGAIN

OPINIONS? HE’S GOT A FEW … … and Gary Lineker just can’t help sharing them. The football legend turned culture warrior talks punditry, podcasts and politics  with Charlotte Edwardes ‘THE MINUTE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH, IT’S SO TOXIC.  HOW COULD IT BE CONTROVERSIAL TO WANT PEACE?’ 20 Jan 2024 - THE GUARDIAN - Saturday Magazine  Portraits: Shamil Tanna GARY LINEKER HAS asked me to meet him at his house in Barnes at 2.30pm. It’s a miserable wet day in London, so I give myself time and arrive just before 2pm. As I turn into the narrow lane that loops round to his address, who should I see trying to squeeze past my car in a black Mini? His eyes slide towards me, then quickly back to the road. Gary Lineker! Where the hell are you going? I glance in my rear-view mirror to see his indicator blinking before he accelerates into a speedy getaway. I stop and check my phone. Sure enough, he’s crying off. “Could you do tomorrow?” he’s messaged. But I just saw you, I protest. Thirty seconds...

"I'm gonna show up at your house" — when Darryl Dawkins tried scaring Chuck Daly into giving him playing time

STEPHEN BESLIC  - SEP 17, 2021 Whether you remember Darryl Dawkins for being the league's ultimate backboard shatterer (he broke two of them in the span of three weeks) or for his powerful throw-downs, everyone would agree on one thing - Dawk was one of the NBA's most intimidating forces. At 6-11, 251 lbs, his physical presence in the paint, in an era that allowed its manifestation, was a nightmare to deal with for every NBA team from the '70s and '80s. Unfortunately, his basketball legacy stopped at that. Instead of translating his gifts into numbers, Dawkins settled for being nothing more than a reliable NBA contributor. That's something even Kareem Abdul Jabbar holds against him . "Darryl spent so much time being a clown and not focusing on the fin...

Of course, for the moment, for the glory, for the fun of it, it is somewhat better than losing games. But does it count in the way that coaches—most of them, at least—swear that it does? Does it add to the quality of life, make for better Americans? Should we get bumper stickers made up saying: WINNERS MAKE BETTER.... What? What exactly do winners do besides win? This is not an original puzzlement. As far back as 22 centuries ago, one of the wiser Greeks concluded, "Those who know how to win ...
