Sports Poets Society

https://www.forumblueandgold.com/2011/11/02/the-riley-prophecy/ NOVEMBER 2, 2011 BY J.M. POULARD During the early 1950s, the Minneapolis Lakers dominated the NBA, capturing three straight titles. With George Mikan retiring and the Celtics drafting Bill Russell in 1956 , the NBA saw Boston establish itself as the franchise to which every dynasty in professional sports would be compared to, by wining an unprecedented 11 championships in 13 seasons. Once Russell retired however, no team was able to win the title in consecutive years for 18 straight seasons. Thus, the idea that a squad could repeat the feat from the previous season almost became laughable. The league had too many stars and too many great teams for one particular franchise to flex its muscles and conquer all would be challengers two years in a row. Many felt that the 1985-86 Boston Celtics would have an opportunity to not only defend their title but also win the Larry O’Brien trophy in 1987; however with Bill Walton gett...

Scott Davis May 8, 2020, 6:50 PM "The Last Dance" has reignited the feud between Michael Jordan Isiah Thomas, particularly over Thomas' exclusion from 1992 Olympic Dream Team. In the documentary, Jordan denied the long-held belief that he kept Thomas off of the team. Jordan is on the record as saying he told Thorn not to put Thomas on the team in Jack McCallum's book "Dream Team" and in McCallum's upcoming podcast series about the Dream Team. There have been disputes about how many other players from the Dream Team didn't want to play with Thomas, with Magic Johnson quoted as saying Thomas "killed" his chances of making the team. One of the bigger themes of ESPN's docuseries "The Last Dance" has b...

Mark Aguirre Mark Aguirre , who is commonly known as Ziggy , is another star that fans will often turn to when they think of the best ballers to hail from Chicago. Aguirre made a bit of a name for himself in the basketball world at the high school and collegiate levels before deciding to turn pro. He attended George Westinghouse College Preparatory High School in Chicago and went on to study at DePaul University in Chicago. Ultimately, Aguirre became the No. 1 overall pick of the 1981 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. During his professional career, Aguirre was a force to be reckoned with among small forwards in the league. He ranked among the top 20 in player efficiency rating for six seasons. Not to forget to mention Aguirre’s name came up at several times in talks for MVP consideration. Aguirre spent a majority of his career as a Maverick and a Detroit Piston before joining the Los Angeles Cl...
