Il texano più irriverente del college basketball è anche uno dei migliori giocatori della nazione. Giunto al secondo anno con la casacca dei Cornuhuskers, Petteway si candida al ruolo di mina vagante in ottica Draft, con le sue quotazioni che al momento non ne assicurano di certo l’entrata tra i 60 che verranno selezionati a giugno.
Dopo essere passato in sordina all’uscita dalla Ball, decide di attendere l’università di Texas Tech senza ottenere troppe soddisfazioni, con i Red Raiders che ne vincono davvero poche, mentre Terran continua a vedere poco il campo.
Nella primavera del 2012 si trasferisce lontano dal Texas, e approda nel Nebraska. Costretto a saltare l’anno successivo per via delle regole NCAA sui transfer, il nativo di Galveston s’irrobustisce, presentandosi al via della stagione 2013-14 con circa 5 kg in più.
Di certo però, la Big Ten non si aspettava di aver trovato una nuova stella: Petteway inizia subito forte la stagione, che terminerà con Nebraska al torneo per la prima volta dal 1998.
Il co-capitano dell’ateneo si guadagna l’inserimento nel primo quintetto divisionale realizzando 18.1 punti ad uscita con il 42.6% dal campo ed il 32.7% da oltre l’arco, catturando anche 4.8 rimbalzi. Chiamato a confermarsi come leader dei suoi Cornhuskers per questa annata, Terran sta di fatto mantenendo le stesse cifre della passata stagione, incrementando però il suo ruolo come distributore (3 assist, 1.2 in più rispetto alla passata annata) ma anche perdendo un numero maggiore di palloni (3.4 rispetto ai 2.8 della passata annata), il tutto probabilmente causato dall’aumentato numero di possessi per partita a disposizione.

- Capace di crearsi un tiro, buon QI offensivo;
– Mezzi fisici sopra la media (apertura alare che recita 208 centimetri);
– Buon difensore sulla palla, anche grazie al suo corpo;
– Gioca con molta aggressività per tutto l’arco dell’incontro;

- Tende a forzare soluzioni difficili, sia per sé che per gli altri;
– Percentuali decisamente migliorabili dagli scarichi;
– Mezzi atletici nella media;
– Ball-handling mediocre;
Draft
L’età avanzata di Petteway ne penalizza di fatto le quotazioni, rendendolo materiale poco appetibile in chiave futura. Nel basket che conta solamente da due annate, in una squadra che peraltro gli ha dato le chiavi in mano rendendolo prima opzione offensiva. Tutto da valutare come role-player, bisognerà vedere se sarà in grado di cambiare totalmente ruolo e stile di gioco, magari aggiungendo efficienza al suo tiro sugli scarichi. Rimane un giocatore in grado di ben comportarsi in vari campi senza però eccellere in alcuno di essi. Prevedo per lui una chiamata a fine secondo giro, ma non sono del tutto sicuro sulle sue possibilità di essere selezionato. In ogni caso dovrebbe avere le opportunità di mostrarsi anche al piano superiore, magari in una squadra che necessita di punti dalla panchina.

Petteway is a talented wing scorer with size and experience ... He can score in all kinds of ways, be it outside or inside, on the catch-and-shoot or on a shot of his own creation ... Weaknesses:
Petteway is a high-volume shooter who isn't always the most efficient player on the court. His shooting percentage was under 40% last season ... Takes a lot of long pull-up jumpers from inside the arc, which is one of the least efficient shots one can take ... He's very confident but at times, it can be over confidence as he forces bad shots ... All in all, he's overly reliant on pull-up jumpers, although part of his shot selection woes can be attributed to the fact that Nebraska had very few viable offensive options ... Can be too aggressive at times, to the point of being out of control ... Averaged a whopping 3.4 turnovers per game last season, a huge number for a non-point guard ... Not a standout athlete ... His combine numbers were very underwhelming, though his wingspan helps him ... His standing vert and max vert were both the fifth-lowest of 49 players measured at the combine, which includes plenty of big men ... Petteway shouldered much of the load for the Huskers the past two years and had a lot of responsibility on offense ... He put up a lot of shots and played very aggressively, which was good, but he was often out of control and trigger-happy. His athleticism is below average for the NBA level, but he's a good teammate and a smart, competitive kid, with high intangibles, so he may be able to make the transition to role player ... Terran Petteway is a gifted scorer that led the Nebraska Cornhuskers in scoring in his two seasons. The Cornhuskers finished 13-18 in the regular season and failed to make the NCAA Tournament. Petteway filled it up on most nights, but he was inefficient (40%). The junior forward scored in double digits 29 of 31 games. Petteway had 13 games of at least 20 points. In the Big Ten tournament Petteway went for 29 points in a three point loss in the first round. The problem with Petteway is that he relied on his scoring too much at times and didn’t produce much in another areas.
Strengths:
Gifted scorer that got his whenever he wanted in college. Solid body for a wing, despite lacking height. Can score around basket and has a midrange game. Improving passer. Mature player and is a good chemistry guy. Can create offense for himself. One of the most skilled players in draft. Good handle for a wing. Extremely long.
Weaknesses:
He isn’t a terrific athlete (31-inch vertical). Might struggle to defend at the next level. Efficiency is a big concern, especially for his position. Shot selection must improve. Lacks an inch or two if he wants to play small forward. Tweener?
Where He Would Help Spurs?
NBA ready scorer that is a team guy with intangibles. Petteway has the makings of a future glue guy off a bench for a terrific team, the Spurs seem to be a good place to start his career.
