St. John’s Head Coach Chris Mullin…

On the season thus far:
“Overall I’ve been pretty pleased with our team’s effort. We have a lot of new players, a whole new roster. The effort has been good. We’re just trying to gain experience each and every day. Whether it’s a game or practice, each and every day is a new experience for our guys. We’ve been patient and stressing skill work, fundamentals and playing together. Overall we’ve won some games that we didn’t necessarily play well and I thought we’ve lost some games that we played pretty well. I’m trying to be very upfront with the players about their performance and their effort level. From an analytical standpoint and effort standpoint, we just try to be upfront with these guys and let them know what it takes to win college basketball games and how to win in the BIG EAST.”

On the matchup against Creighton:
“They play a nice fast paced style. They have a really quick guard that ignites everything. Defensively it’s going to be very important we get back in transition. A constant theme for us has been keeping the turnovers down and rebounding the ball well. I’ve told my guys that every level I’ve played at and have been around, fundamentals help you win and lose. Defense, rebounding and turnovers; if you win those battles you give yourself a chance to win.”

On a fresh start in conference play:
“I try to treat each and every day like that. I think when you have young guys, it’s important to retain the information from the day before but not let a win or loss dictate how you work the next day. We are trying to focus on our daily habits. This break between games, I treat it a little bit like the NBA All-Star break. Whatever happens prior to the holiday break, we have a fresh start. We try to repeat the things we did well and try to learn from our mistakes.”

On the overall impressions of the BIG EAST:
“I really like the way it’s set up now. I think it’s set up as a basketball loaded conference, which it was originally. I like the fact that you play each other home and away which should help develop some real rivalries. I think in time, it’s going to develop in what Dave Gavitt originally created. That’s going to take a little bit of time but it’s a tight conference. The way it’s set up now is really set up for success.”

On the first conference game as a coach:
“There’s so much focus on practice and preparation that the “firsts” come and go. It’s cool because I haven’t been around in so long. It’s nice to be back involved with the conference and see people I’ve been involved with over the years. I have a lot of respect for all of the universities.”
On the depth of the BIG EAST:
“It’s good, hard competition. There’s a lot of respect and good basketball. A lot of these teams have won a lot of games out of conference. I think that the league is well prepared and well coached. When you have good players you will win games. There are a lot of great players in this conference. I’m looking forward to the start.”
