Few felt that Bob Pettit could continue his high-scoring college play in the NBA. Sure, he'd grown a few inches and had a deadly one-handed jumper, but at a wiry 200 pounds he was simply too skinny to mix it up under the board and survive. Pettit confounded the skeptics with an indomitable work ethic and became the first in a series of titans to grapple with Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics for NBA supremacy.

Pettit led his Hawks to the finals four times in five years beginning in 1957. The first series took two overtimes in the seventh game to decide in the Celtics' favor. The following year, Pettit scored 50 points in the decisive sixth game, including 19 of the team's last 21, and the clinching basket. Pettit's team would be the only club to defeat Russell's Celtics in a finals series, and the last to beat them in any playoff for eight years. Russell paid tribute to Pettit: "Bob made 'second effort' a part of the sport's vocabulary. He kept coming at you more than any man in the game."

Russell was not alone in his assessment. Dolph Schayes said, "There was no way you could stop [the once-skinny kid] over the course of a game. He was just too strong." Pettit's cracking the top five in points and rebounds in each of ten seasons remains a feat unmatched in NBA history. (Chamberlain did it nine times; Abdul-Jabbar eight.) He is one of only four players to average 20 points and rebounds per game for an entire season (1961). Pettit was the first to score 20,000 points for his career and has the third highest career average RPG, behind only Chamberlain and Russell. When choosing forwards for his 50th Anniversary NBA squad, Red Auerbach could not leave Pettit off the team: "He was as tough an opponent as we ever had. He could beat you inside, he could beat you outside. And he played two positions: forward on offense, center when he got down to the other end and had to rebound."
