FOOTBALL PORTRAITS - I cinque di Sensi

Immagine

Sagan (Procycling 2015)

No matter what he did at this year’s Tour de France, Peter Sagan simply couldn’t win a stage. Five times the Tinkoff-Saxo rider was a runner-up, beaten by faster sprinters or lighter climbers. Yet he came out of the race with his fourth green jersey and his popularity at sky-high levels thanks to the flair he demonstrated on the bike and the humour he showed off it. In a fractious Tour, he was much-needed light relief. His versatility is peerless: “I’m a special rider,” he says. But what does he need to do to turn second-place finishes into wins? Writer: Sam Dansie Late in July, Peter Sagan returned to the post-Tour criterium scene for the first time in two years. This wasn’t the money-making whirlwind of 2012, when he rode eight or nine. In fact, he only appeared at three but that was enough to confirm what we all already knew: that the 25-yearold’s popularity had reached new heights. It was captured perfectly at the podium picture from the Aalst criterium the Monday after...

Peter Sagan comes second a lot but he may be the world’s best cyclist

Is there a bigger star in cycling right now than Peter Sagan? The Slovakian just won his fourth consecutive Tour de France green jersey and his quirky post-race interviews have endeared him to cycling fans the world over. He’s a true contender in the Classics and in the bunch sprints. He even won the Tour of California this year, showing a previously untapped talent for time trialling. During the Tour de France, his team boss Oleg Tinkov made an interesting point, in between the casual insults, offensive tweets and provocative bluster. He said that Sagan was the strongest cyclist in the world. It’s an interesting point, because Sagan is just as famous for not winning as he is for winning. At the last two Tours, he’s finished top-five 20 times without winning a stage. How can a rider who always comes second be the best cyclist in the world? The answer is in that breadth of talent. He’s one of the few riders in the bunch who has an effect on every race he’s in - his rivals, knowing how ...

EKIMOV - The Untouchable

VIATCHESLAV EKIMOV Cycling continues to purge the old guard but Katusha’s general manager seems impregnable. Procycling assesses the significance of the Russian’s presence in the WorldTour merry-go-round. WRITER: Herbie Sykes (Procycling 209, November 2015) During the autumn of 2012, the UCI Licence Commission stated that it was deferring decisions on three WorldTour renewals. The licence applications of Movistar and RadioShack were to be closely scrutinised, and so too was that of Katusha , the team of incumbent WorldTour champion Joaquim Rodríguez . In December the bombshell duly arrived. Katusha – and Katusha alone – were out , and that was that. Of course, the team cried foul immediately and announced that they would be appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The specifics of the decision weren’t forthcoming, so the press began speculating, blaming the Russians’ perceived ethical deficit. Many cited the proxy war (and long-standing personal enmity) between ...

Beneath folders of apps, at its center, Maryland guard Melo Trimble flexes and screams. This happens a lot. Multiple times a day, every day, almost all of it unsolicited. Encouragement, criticism, predictions, requests, religious counseling. Gifs, Vines, mixtapes. NBA2K16 doppelgangers. Brazen assessments of physical appearance. Breathless recountings of real-world run-ins. Unrequited professions ...
