Era vincitore di una Parigi-Nizza già nel 1981, a 21 anni e pochi mesi, di due Giri di Romandia (1983 e 1984), la tappa del Tour ’85 da Luz-Saint-Sauveur al Colle d’Aubisque , e di altre corse, ma per ipotizzare che l’annata sarebbe andata come andò non sarebbe bastata un’indovina. Roche aveva compiuto 27 anni il 28 novembre ed era dunque nel pieno della maturità agonistica. That’s the month my late dad, a longtime high school basketball coach and athletic director, would pack my brother and I in the car and we’d head off to East Lansing for the state high school basketball semifinals and finals. The first year he took us was 1967 – I was 13 and my brother 15.
