MAESTRI DI BASKET - Addio Sloan, il "Mr Bull" nella Chicago di Bellow (2020)

Immagine

It Wasn’t a Betrayal, Just Business

by Barry Ryan The Ascent: Sean Kellty, Stephen Roche and the Rise of Irish Cycling's Golden Generation Gill Books Carrera Jeans, based in Caldiero on the outskirts of Verona, was established by Tito Tacchella and his brothers Imerio and Domenico in 1965. By the mid-1980s, inspired by the success of another Veneto clothing empire, Benetton, they sought to boost their international profile by taking over the sponsorship of the Inoxpran cycling team. Although Boifava managed the sporting operations, the brothers’ interest extended far beyond signing off on the team’s budget each season. Tito Tacchella was due to visit the Giro when it hit the high mountains in any case, but after watching on television as one Carrera rider divested another of pink, he brought his trip forward in order to pass Salomonic judgement on the power struggle.  A helicopter was ordered to transport him to Sappada immediately, but somewhere above Treviso, Tacchella was compelled to turn back by air ...

La Serie A riparte col 36x11

Immagine
Dica 36.

‘People Going Home Tonight’

Immagine
by Barry Ryan The Ascent: Sean Kellty, Stephen Roche and the Rise of Irish Cycling's Golden Generation Gill Books Carrera signed Eddy Schepers ahead of 1986 season expressly to serve as Roche’s wingman in the mountains, but unlike Valcke, his new leader’s long absences from racing were no grounds for an existential crisis. At 31 years of age and after almost a decade in the peloton, the Belgian had seen everything and was fazed by nothing. As an amateur, he was gifted enough to win the Tour de l’Avenir and the Giro delle Regioni. As a professional, he was canny enough to understand he was never going to be a champion, and he carved out a niche instead as a deluxe domestique, flitting between teams in Belgium and Italy according to demand for his services. Schepers was a hired hand, and he simply got on with the job in 1986, helping Visentini to win the Giro and Urs Zimmermann to 3rd place at the Tour. ‘It was a good season, even allowing for Stephen’s injury,’ Schepers says...

'The Road Would Decide'

Immagine
by Barry Ryan The Ascent: Sean Kellty, Stephen Roche and the Rise of Irish Cycling's Golden Generation Gill Books ‘When you win the Giro d’Italia, you can spend the money any way you want,’ Roberto Visentini says, his voice rasping with indignation over the phone from his home above Lake Garda. The charge levelled at him through his career, by both the press and his peers, was that he would have won a lot more had his devotion to the austere life of professional cycling matched his reported enthusiasm for la bella vita. It is, understandably, characterisation Visentini resents to this day. ‘The people who say that are ignorant, basta. But then again, there weren’t a lot of correct people in cycling. Sons of bitches.  Given that his family’s considerable wealth was derived from the gloomy business of funeral direction, it was perhaps only fitting that Visentini would be a rather morose kind of playboy. Handsome, talented, moneyed and with a penchant for fast cars, V...

The Devil Within

Immagine
by Barry Ryan The Ascent: Sean Kellty, Stephen Roche and the Rise of Irish Cycling's Golden Generation Gill Books Patrick Valcke was the only member of the entourage Roche brought with him from La Redoute to Carrera at the beginning of 1986. It was a lonely kind of existence, especially as Roche had picked up a knee injury after a crash during the Paris Six-Day track event over the winter, and scarcely raced in the opening months of the season as he searched for e remedy. Though this big money acquisition was a statement of global ambition from Carrera, the team, sponsored by a Verona-based jeans manufacturer, remained resolutely local in feel. Team manager Davide Boifava, star rider Roberto Visentini and the bulk of the staff all hailed from the hinterland of Lake Garda. Outsiders were few, or at least it felt that way. If Carrera was a family, then Valcke was its black sheep, viewed with a mix of suspicion and contempt. ‘Carrera was a big machine, but at the same time, vi...

HOOPS MEMORIES - Magic di nome e di fatto

Immagine

Where Are They Now? Martin Earley: glasses, grit and mountain bikes

Immagine
https://journal.rouleur.cc/martin-earley/ Heritage Posted on  08.02.17 The third man in the holy trinity of late 1980s Irish cycling and the owner of the most famous chrome-rimmed glasses in sport , whatever happened to Tour de France and Giro d’Italia stage winner Martin Earley? Words: Luke Edwardes-Evans Photographs: Offside/l'Equipe He looks like any other fit MAMIL (middle-aged man in Lycra), pedalling out of Hilderstone village and into the Staffordshire lanes. Still trim at 54-years-old, there’s precious little to hint at Martin Earley’s prowess on a bike, albeit over 20 years ago. But followers of the 1980s pro scene will recognise the chrome-rimmed prescription glasses and, on the odd sunny day, the steel Concorde team issue PDM team bike that remains one of the few ways that Earley enjoys rekindling a memory or two from his 11 year pro career. That’s not to say he isn’t proud of the Tour de France (1989) and Giro d’Italia (1986) stage...
