The Ellis Park Arena (formerly Standard Bank Arena and often acknowledged as Ellis Park Indoor Arena) is an indoor sporting arena located in Johannesburg , South Africa . The capacity of the arena is 5,000 people. A large number of sports events and concerts have occurred in this arena. The Ellis Park Arena has 4,300 permanent seats which give all spectators an unobstructed view. In addition there are retractable seats on the east and west sides on the floor for an additional 850 spectators . Chairs can also be placed on the floor up to a maximum of 1,200 making the capacity of the Arena approximately 6,300 . There is a covered walkway around the Arena which includes a theatre style foyer, a fully licensed bar facility, as well as refreshment outlets and entertainment areas. Several suites in the Ellis Park Arena have a cocktail environment and can be used for private functions. Appropriately, given the squiggle of road climbing the cliff face, lacets is French for shoelaces. The riders will be warming up on the rollers on the morning of the longest alpine stage of the race. The peloton heads straight uphill out of Gap on the Col Bayard before a relentless succession of 4 more short, sharp ascents (including the wonderfully named Rampe du Motty, the Côte de la Mure, the Col du Malissol and the Col de la Morte) and the Col du Glandon, a fearsome 21 km long monster . 161 km | Wednesday July 22 | Start 12:45 – Finish 16:50 CET STAGE FACT Eddy Merckx has happy memories of start town Digne-les-Bains: it was here in 1969 that he took one of his 6 stage wins in that race. This is it: fresh from a rest day, the final push and four arduous days in the Alps start here. Regardless of how things have gone so far, there’ll be nowhere to hide for the race leader. The stages ahead are generally short, designed to encourage aggressive racing. So what’s in store? Excitement. It’s a lumpy stage that will could tempt some of the KOM (King Of Mountain) contenders into the break but the GC battle will ignite on the penultimate climb, the 23 km Col d’Allos. 201 km | Monday July 20 | Start 12:25 – Finish 17:20 CET STAGE FACT Two of the last two three stage-winners into Gap have been Portuguese: Rui Costa in 2013 and Sergio Paulinho in 2010 Although it rarely hosts a full-blown mountain stage, Gap is frequently the Tour’s gateway into or out of the Alps, and it rarely disappoints. A town of 40,000 surrounded by dusty mountains, it welcomes Tour chaos with bumper-to-bumper traffic, chockablock hotels and highly memorable racing. The Tour’s Poggio It’s invariably the Col de Manse , outside of town that provides the drama. A second-category ascent that summits at 1,268 m 12 km from the finish, it solicits attacks like a punch-bag. For the second successive stage, the previous day’s finish town is the stage start . Mende waves the peloton off towards an undulating first 125 km — including the ascent of the 8 km Col de l’Escrinet — before a fast and flat finish that will tempt the sprinters’ teams. Where are we? We’re in the Rhône-Alpes region though the finishing city of Valence, in the south of the region, has only ever been included in one edition of the Tour, back in 1996 when it was used as a finish and a start . 178.5 km | Saturday July 18 | Start 12:35 – Finish 17:00 CET STAGE FACT Today’s route runs just a little bit north of that of the Tour de Mont Aigoual, the fictional race at which Tim Krabbe’s classic book The Rider is set. Alow-key airfield situated high above the Massif Central town of Mende is the unlikely location for repeat visits from the Tour. But they’ve kept coming back here every 5 years since the relatively local Laurent Jalabert sealed two Bastille Day victories here in 1995 and 2000 . In fact the Côte de la Croix Neuve climb up to the airfield has been semi-officially renamed in his honour .  What’s the Montée Laurent Jalabert like? It has been occupied by Celts, Romans, Franks, Visigoths, Moors and, during the 100 Years War, the English After three days of summit finishes in the Pyrenees , the peloton heads north-east into the department of Aveyron. A far easier day than what came before, there are only three lowly categorised climbs and the main contenders will likely treat it as an unofficial rest day . One uncategorised climb comes 10 km before the end, while the finish culminates with a 400 m rise at a gradient of 9.6%. Sprint or breakaway? Could go either way. Traditionally you’d think this is classic breakaway territory but in more recent years sprinters’ teams have kept things together over tougher parcours. In Italia, costretti dalle circostanze (e dalla mancanza di cultura sportiva), la nibalite è il virus imperante dei (nostri?) telecronisti. Che, dopo ore di chiacchere, infilano perle: su Eurosport siamo riusciti a far passare Cyrille Guimard come diesse de La Vie Claire di Tapie.
