Roubaix 2016: Raiders on the Storme

Sagan and Cancellara: The same but different

http://velonews.competitor.com/2016/04/news/sagan-cancellara-different_401895 By John Bradley They went one-two in the Tour of Flanders and are the top two picks for Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix. Fabian Cancellara and Peter Sagan are clearly the best classics riders of 2016. But where Cancellara is riding out his final season (and going out on top), Sagan looks to be just getting started — at least where the major classics are concerned. After a string of second-place finishes in 2016, Sagan opened up his account last month at Gent-Wevelgem then nabbed the first monument of his career at the Tour of Flanders. And those come after his world championship victory on a classics-type route in Richmond. But if Sagan is ascendant in the classics, he’s merely climbed to the level that Cancellara, nine years his senior, has been on for years. While Cancellara never got a road race rainbow jersey to go along with his four time trial world championships, the Swiss legend wil...

The snow-hit Paris-Roubaix of 1994

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/the-snow-hit-paris-roubaix-of-1994/ Procycling’s contributing editor Peter Cossins remembers an epic edition By Peter Cossins April 07, 2016 11:26am Updated: April 07, 2016 11:26am Race: Paris-Roubaix Looking back, I wonder whether I put some kind of hex on Johan Museeuw . The weekend prior to reporting on my first Paris-Roubaix , I’d covered the Tour of Flanders for the first time. I’d bagged a ride there with Belgian journalist Noel Truyers in a car driven by Paul Wellens, whose illustrious palmarès featured a sixth place finish in the 1978 Tour de France. I had absolutely no idea who Wellens was and, in fact, barely knew where I was, as he guided the car through a warren of tiny lanes heaving with boisterous fans. But at the finish I gained an illuminating insight into what the race meant to those fans as Gianni Bugno beat Museeuw by a tyre’s width, the Italian’s success completing puncturing the festive atmosphere. Sitting on...

2016 Paris-Roubaix race preview

http://www.cyclingnews.com/paris-roubaix/preview/ By Patrick Fletcher April 07, 2016 5:30am Updated: April 07, 2016 8:05am  Race: Paris-Roubaix The Ardennes may await later in April, but across the Franco-Belgian border, Paris-Roubaix  brings the curtain down on the spring's cobbled Classics on Sunday. It's one of the oldest, perhaps the most prestigious, probably the most iconic, of the lot. From the merciless sectors of pavé that cut through the bleak, war-torn landscape of France's Nord département, to the finish on the concrete banks of the Roubaix velodrome , the dirt-encrusted faces of the riders, and the post-race open shower block where that grime is washed away; it is a race replete with idiosyncrasies. Now in its 114th edition, the race was first held back in 1896 , stopping for both world wars , and it was due to devastation wreaked by the first of those wars that the moniker ' The Hell of the North ' was born. Thanks to the self-...

Portrait: Peter Sagan

https://rouleur.cc/journal/riders/peter-sagan-interview JOURNAL RIDERS  03.11.15 Thoughtful, funny, clever. In the court of the real Peter Sagan, cycling's new World Champion WORDS Timothy John May 15, 1988. Ayrton Senna laps the street circuit at Monaco a full 1.427 seconds faster than his closest competitor, then double world champion, Alain Prost, who happens to be his team-mate. Senna’s performance in qualifying is mesmerising, even to him: he will later compare the lap to "an out of body experience". Peter Sagan is a resident of Monaco and no stranger to extraordinary sporting performances. He shares Senna’s exceptional talent – even his peers consider him uniquely gifted – but I shelve my carefully prepared question: Sagan is too level-headed for such flights of fancy. He admits to no more than riding on instinct, which isn’t to suggest that he is unthinking. Spend anytime at all with Sagan and the routinely two-dimensi...

Cruyff’s legacy

by Jordi Punti Guardiola was born to coach,” said Juan Manuel Lillo, who managed him when he turned out for Dorados de Sinaloa . But Guardiola is far from the only player who learned his trade under Johan Cruyff and later went on to coach a leading team. There are many such examples, some boasting years of experience in the job. The list includes Ronald Koeman , currently in charge of Southampton, Julen Lopetegui (Porto), Albert Ferrer (Cordoba), Michael Laudrup (Lekhwiya, Qatar), Eusebio (Barcelona B) and also Sergi Barjuan and Hristo Stoichkov, although both are currently without a club. In reality these former players are not only keeping alive the legacy bequeathed by Cruyff. Another Dutchman, Louis van Gaal, nourished and maintained a strictly defined house style during his spell at the Barcelona helm, handing Xavi his debut for example. Against this background, Van Gaal’s arrival at Manchester United following his success with the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup cou...

Johan Cruyff: The American Years

But last Thursday, when the news about Johan Cruyff’s death broke , the country was in collective shock, in complete disbelief. Cruyff was immortal, we thought, despite his recent lung cancer diagnosis. Days of press coverage and tributes since then revealed not only deep adoration for his sheer genius but also strong nostalgia for our own past. Memories of Cruyff led to flashbacks of our own youth, since Cruyff had always been there, on or off the field, as a key figure. Surely, he was a world-class soccer player and coach, who modernized the game of football. More importantly, he helped shape our national identity over the last 50 years, perhaps even more so than the House of ...
