After 123 years in existence, Holstein Kiel is beginning its inaugural Bundesliga season. Holstein Kiel has spent the past seven years scoring relentlessly in the second division of Bundesliga. They finished third in 2018 and 2021 but failed to win the promotion playoff round. The third time was the charm as they’ve finally made it to the top division of the Bundesliga.
Holstein Kiel might sound vaguely familiar because they pulled off a shocking upset of Bayern Munich in the second round of the 2021 DFB-Pokal. Hauke Wahl scored an equalizer in stoppage time, and Holstein Kiel completed the rally with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory. Holstein Kiel advanced to defeat Darmstadt and Rot-Weiss Essen before falling to Dortmund in the semifinals.
