In 2023, Union Berlin finished 4th in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Champions League. In 2024, Union Berlin were relieved to escape relegation after their worst season since joining the top flight of the Bundesliga in 2019. Janik Haberer scored a goal in stoppage on the last match day to keep Union Berlin out of the relegation playoff.

Injuries played a large role, along with the inability to find the back of the net. During the Hinrunde, Union Berlin went on a nine-game losing streak that included seven shutouts.

Against Bayern Munich, Union Berlin didn’t have the same luck as the other Bundesliga bottom feeders. Union Berlin lost 1-0 in January and 5-1 in April.

After a leaving Mainz last November, Bo Svensson will take over at Union Berlin. The fresh start should bolster Union Berlin’s performance and see them finish closer to midtable.
